Hosius, Stanislaus

Hosius, Stanislaus
(1504–79)
   Cardinal and Polemicist.
Hosius was born in Cracow, Poland, and was educated at the Universities of Padua and Bologna. He became Secretary to the Bishop of Cracow, was ordained in 1543 and was consecrated Bishop in 1549. A dedicated Catholic, he was determined to root out Protestantism from Poland. His Confessio Fidei Catholicae Christianae was hugely successful and went through many editions. Known as the ‘hammer of heretics’, he was a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation. In 1558 he was appointed to the College of Cardinals and, as a leading member of the Curia, he took a prominent part in the Council of Trent (1545–63).
